Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard something about the book and DVD, called The Secret. The Secret is an explanation of the laws of attraction, mainly how you can have control over bringing good things into your life. There is a lot of controversary over this notion of controling one’s own destiny, as well as, over the media hype that surrounds the book and the writer. I have done a lot of my own research on this book and this theory, and my take away from it is this:

Each one of us is responsible for doing everything that we can to create the best possible environment and world in which we live. If we choose to think negatively about the world around us, then we are more apt to see the negative. But if we focus ourselves on the positive things that surround us, that in turn will help us to have more positive experiences and a life of joy rather than sorrow. The bottom line is, like attracts like.

I try to instill these types of thoughts into my own life every day. I have a vision board (more on this in a minute). I look for the silver lining or the new door opening when one closes. I keep an open mind. Granted we all have our struggles, no life is completely free of bumps in the road, but its how you perceive the “bumps” that ultimately decides your fate, not the bump itself.

Yesterday, I watched the movie Penelope. Some might call it a “chick flick”, but I think it holds a very good message for everyone – its not the situation that can affect your life, but the power that you give the situation. I truly believe that we have the power to take our weaknesses and make them our strengths. The truth is, it’s not about a “secret”, its about empowering yourself and realizing that we all have control, and we have always had it. We just need to use it.

I am sure you would agree that we can all benefit from altering our perspective a little, in order to see the good in life rather than the bad. So give this theory a chance and try it out. What do you have to lose, right? In order to achieve your best life goals, whether that may be through nutrition and fitness or just having a healthier perspective on life in general, here is my checklist based on the law of attraction, for reaching those goals.

Declare

You must verbally declare what goals you want to achieve. In order to reach a goal, you have to be clear in your mind on what that goal actually is. Now, I am not saying to grab the microphone from the blue light special lady at KMart, and yell it over the loud speaker, but declare in the sense of telling yourself outloud, today is the day I am going to begin my new life of {insert goal here}. The Secret suggests that our thoughts are in fact a real thing – a force. Why not use that force, that power, to attain our best life rather than wasting it, dwelling on the negative thoughts that just bring us down?

Write Down Your Goals and/or Make A Vision Board

Write down a list of your goals. This could be a list of 5 or even 100. Whatever goals you want to attain, write them down. Better yet, create a vision board. A vision board is typically a poster-size board filled with pictures, words, phrases, and symbols, of the goals you wish to achieve. It helps to reinforce them when you put these goals on a board that you can see on a daily basis. This is, in a sense, asking for what you feel you deserve. If you don’t ask, then how will you receive?

Believe You Deserve It

Its one thing to say it, but do you believe it? In order to achieve your best life, you have to believe that you deserve to be happy. You have to believe that you can and WILL achieve these goals. You have to believe that you are a good, deserving person. It all boils down to truly loving yourself, which in my opinion, is the foundation of it all.

Feel Good About It

Look over your list of goals. Make sure that these wants all come from a place of good feelings. These goals have to be goals that make you feel strong and good about yourself when you envision achieving them. If they do, that means they come from a healthy place. But if they don’t, and they give you an icky feeling in the pit of your stomach, that might mean that they are not coming from a place of value. Its one thing to say that you want to achieve a level of wealth where you can live comfortably and never have to worry about bills, putting food on the table, a mortgage payment, etc but another to say I want to be filthy rich and have so much money I don’t know what to do with it.

Another part of this step is to focus on being grateful for what you already have that is good. Use this positive energy to empower yourself to move toward your best life. Focus on your dream being a reality, not on your frustrations.

Your Actions Must Match Your Thoughts

Now that you have a firm hold on exactly what you want, you have to act in ways that support it. Part of this step is just being honest with yourself too. You want to lose 20 lbs of fat? Well you can’t eat a super size value meal from McDonald’s every day for lunch and expect your waistline to decrease in inches. The law of attraction doesn’t work in this way. I am joking, but serious here. Say your goal is to land a job that you really want. Its a perfect fit for you in every way. You apply for it. Then the next step is to start clearing out your office of personal things. Write your letter of resignation…don’t hand it in yet though. icon wink The Secret to Achieving Your Best Life Goals You must visualize yourself having achieved this goal. You must act as if it has already happened. This may sound nutty to some, but you have got to believe and act in ways that support this ultimate goal.

Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations help us to retrain our subconscous mind. They work in the same way as negative self-talk. The more you tell yourself something, the more you tend to believe it. Again, review your list of goals above and start putting together a sentence that explains one of your goals as if it has already happened.

“I have achieved the body of my dreams.”

“I have landed the perfect job. It fits me like a glove and I love coming to work each day.”

“I have reached a point of success where I am living comfortably and am totally content.”

Make sure your affirmations are positive, meaning they do not include words like no, can’t, never, etc. Add these positive affirmations to your vision board, print them out and hang them above your desk, or even just repeat them to yourself throughout the day. You will start to notice a big difference in the way you feel and think.

Summing It All Up

If you need more of a scientific explanation in order to believe in controling your future with positive energy, it is said that when we believe we are cabable of achieving our best life goals, we tend to take more risks, see more opportunities, and be more open to new possibilities. We are less likely to sabotage our own chances at happiness with negativity if we are focusing on the good rather than the bad things in life. Research on optimism shows that people who choose to have a positive outlook on life are more likely to be healthier, happier, and find more success.

Harness your power. With a few tweaks to your perspective, you have what it takes to alter your path from a downward spiral to a fast paced ascent. Its time to quit with the self doubt, stop the negative talk, and break those bad habits and start new, healthy ones. Start living the life that you truly deserve to live.
